The Butler School District is continuing negotiations with the WPIAL regarding a recent ruling that Butler football cannot play in the District 10 playoffs as an associate member.
According to Superintendent Dr. Brian White, he has had at least three conversations with the WPIAL Executive Director and six with the WPIAL Board President since the PIAA decision last week:
“We have been in discussions with them. We are trying to work to see if we can come to a compromise with them,” White said. “The discussions are not over at this point. The district has not yet taken any legal action. We prefer to work something out with the WPIAL.”
The PIAA has referred this situation completely back to the WPIAL and is not involved in any sort of discussions about a compromise.
Attorney Tom Breth of Dillon McCandless King Coulter and Graham, who serves as the district’s solicitor, previously informed our newsroom that former WPIAL Executive Director Tim O’Malley initially granted Butler permission to play District 10 in January 2020. That decision was recently reversed by the WPIAL and then appealed to the PIAA.
