Oni Toppin of Dayton has been named the unanimous Associated Press men’s basketball player of the year. His head coach Anthony Grant was named coach of the year. Dayton went undefeated in conference play and ended the season 29-2 overall. They likely would have been a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Dayton duo are just the second to win both awards in the same year in the past 40 seasons.
Toppin averaged 20 points per game and 7.5 rebounds. He shot 63% from the field and 39% from 3-point range.
Grant is in his third year leading the Flyers.
A CBS Sports simulation of the NCAA men’s tournament resulted in Dayton cutting the net.
