One child has died and two others were injured when they were hit by a car Monday morning in Summit Township.
According to a State Police spokesman, the accident happened about 9 a.m. at the intersection of Geibel Road and Pine Drive.
A driver was making a right turn and stopped at the stop sign but did not see the three children by the side of the road. The driver stopped to investigate after realizing something had been hit. The mother of the children responded to the scene but the identities of those involved have not yet been released.
Emergency medical treatment was started by the first trooper arriving at the scene. Two children were flown in an emergency medical helicopter for treatment while another child was transported by a citizen who had stopped to help. The State Police investigation into this incident is ongoing.
One of the children hit was killed, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office.
Butler Superintendent Dr. Brian White issued this statement regarding the accident in Summit Township Monday morning:
“I am at a loss for words regarding this morning’s tragedy. Anytime a student passes it is devastating and it impacts our entire school community. We have made and will continue to make extra counselors available for any students and staff members who are in need of grief support.
The way our school community pulls together to support one another in the face of an incredibly difficult situation never fails to amaze me. I’m grateful to the many people who stepped up today and will continue to do so to offer their support to all those in need.
On behalf of the entire school community, we extend our deepest sympathy to the student’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
