Today is the first day of winter.
The Winter Solstice occurred at 5:44 a.m. Wednesday in the northern hemisphere, which means today is the shortest day of the year in terms of sunlight (only 9 hours and 7 minutes of sun for western Pennsylvania).
But, after today, we gain a little bit of daylight each day until summer.
Locally, we should get above freezing on Wednesday despite it being the first day of winter. The National Weather Service expects partly sunny skies with a high near 38 degrees.
And, it looks like it won’t be a white Christmas in western Pennsylvania. Forecasters predict cloudy skies and a high near 42 on Sunday.
