Planes from the World War II-era are once again flying in for an event at the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport beginning Thursday.
The ‘Wings of Freedom Tour’ will bring four of the most famous WWII-era planes for visitors to tour and fly in. The bombers and fighters arrived on Thursday. They will be on-display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
According to airport Manager Ike Kelly, tours of the interiors of these rare planes are available at a cost of $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and younger.
“It’s an education really, to climb through these airplanes and really see the conditions that the flight crews operated in,” he said. “Keep in mind that most of the people that were flying these planes were 18 or 19 years old. Maybe if you’re 20, you were old. So it’s interesting to really get inside the aircraft and see what it was all about.”
For those interested in a more adventurous experience, flights can be purchased through The Collings Foundation, which is presenting the visit.
