The Winfield Township Volunteer Fire Department has been dissolved.
Township Secretary Adam Hartwig said the board of supervisors took a vote dissolving the company during a meeting on Thursday evening.
The decision to dissolve comes after what amounts to years of fire department officials resisting township recommendations regarding trainings and standard operating procedures.
“Unfortunately this has been going on for the better part of a decade,” Hartwig said. “The board has been very open and willing to help in the past. There just comes a point in time when you can’t put the safety of the residents in jeopardy.”
Three neighboring fire departments- Herman, Saxonburg and Buffalo Township- will now provide fire protection services for Winfield residents.
