Have you ever wondered by televisions are so hard to recycle?
Justin Stockdale, with the Pennsylvania Resources Council, told us that recycling TVs got tougher after a law was passed in the state. He says the law holds manufacturers and/or organizations responsible for the cost of recycling TVs. Stockdale says, the PRC has found that many groups either choose not or cannot afford to foot the bill.
The timing of the law was just around the time that many people were switching from their big box televisions to flat screens. So, there is a big need to find a recycling option.
As a result, the PRC holds many ‘Hard To Recycle’ events throughout the state each year. These events are options for individuals to get rid of many items. Recently, at an event in May, TVs were accepted by the PRC.
Any event where PRC would accept TVs for recycling there may be a fee. Stockdale says that is not so they can make money, but instead to cover the cost.
