Now that Christmas is over, you can get rid of your tree by recycling it…but what happens to the tree when you do?
Mary Messer, Director of Slippery Rock Community Park, says in the past they have worked with the Fish and Boat Commission. They would take the trees and put them in streams and creeks to create an area where the trees would decompose naturally.
Messer suggested another use for recycled Christmas trees. “We’re in the process of building a 2-mile walking trail. So, what we would like to do is mulch all those Christmas trees and use that as a side, on each side, of the walking trail,” she said. Messer says some tree recycling locations will turn the trees into mulch for other uses as well.
No matter the outcome, always make sure your tree is clear of decorations.
Slipper Rock Community Park, located on 320 North Main Street in Slippery Rock, has free Christmas tree drop-off through January 7, 2017.
