The National Park Service is investigating if Washington’s Trail should be named a National Scenic Trail.
Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau President Jack Cohen was one of the people accompanying representatives from the National Park Service last week as they toured the length of the trail.
According to Cohen, the process is still in the very early stages and requires congressional approval, but receiving this recognition would be an honor.
“It would impact a lot of things,” Cohen said. “Think about the visitors that would want to take that trail and learn more about its rich history that we have right in our own community. It would bring in new guests to visit with us. This is a very big deal.”
Congressman Mike Kelly has requested the results of the preliminary study and the Parks Service will report their findings to him before they make the decision to proceed further with a more in-depth study.
The trail commemorates young George Washington’s first military and diplomatic venture through western Pennsylvania in the Fall and Winter of 1753-1754.
