The Washington Capitals hammered the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-1 last night in the Pens opening game of a three-game road trip. The Caps scored three goals in the first period and three more in the third. Two goals were power-play goals, and the opening goal of the game was scored short-handed. Penguins goaltender Matt Murray left the game in the first period after taking a stick to the face. Marc-Andre Fleury entered and gave up five goals. The Pens are now tied with Washington for second place in the Metropolitan Division and have fallen four points behind the first-place New York Rangers, who dumped Vancouver 7-2 last night.
The Pens visit the New York Islanders tomorrow night before travelling to Buffalo Saturday. Both game are 7pm face-offs.
