As we get set to close out National Fire Prevention Week, many are noticing the shrinking number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania and what that might mean down the road.
State Fire Commissioner Tim Solobay says the dwindling numbers are putting a strain on those who do volunteer, especially as they get older.
“We had 300,000 volunteers 30 years ago, but now we’re down to about 50,000,” Solobay said.
He’s pushing local and state governments to direct more funding and incentives to volunteer fire companies and he says without that- volunteer companies could close and local taxes could skyrocket.
“It’s getting tougher and tougher,” he said.
