How do you develop empathy in kids today in an age of technology? It’s a question many of us ask and wonder.
Dr. Michelle Borba, author of Unselfie and expert in teaching parents about child bullying, talked to WISR. She says researchers have tracked incoming college freshman over the last 30 years. They have found that individuals who were wrapped up in themselves increased 58 percent. Empathy dipped 40 percent in the same time span.
She says some reasons why young adults never learn empathy is because of the overuse of screens, being over-scheduled, and that some parenting styles are different. Borba even mentioned that some kids can even feel lonelier even though they think they are connected through a variety of devices.
Borba give tips on how you can teach your kids to have empathy. She says tell kids to always look at someone in the eyes, teach what empathy is, allow kids to interact more with other children, and not only ask kids questions about their day, but how they felt about it.
Borba also says to help children develop a perspective of someone else’s thought-process. They don’t necessarily need to agree with another person, but it is positive that they understand another’s perspective.
