There are now 11 people from the United States who have died from defective Takata air bag inflators.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed Thursday a 50-year-old woman who died after a car wreck last month in California is the 11th victim.
One of those 11 victims was from western Pennsylvania. Honda said a 13-year-old Grove City boy who was driving a relative’s car in July of 2015 was killed by a defective air bag after he crashed.
Takata air bags can inflate with too much force, which causes a metal canister to rupture and spew shrapnel into the vehicle.
The problem touched off what is now the largest auto recall in U.S. history. More than 69 million inflators have been recalled in the U.S. and more than 100 million worldwide.
