–Mars high school head basketball coach Dana Petruska has been named the Pennsylvania “Coach of the Year” for Class 5A. Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s Molly Rottman has been named the 4A “Coach of the Year.”
–Mars teammates Tai Johnon, a junior and senior Lauren Wasylson was named to the 5A All-State first team.
–Kylee Lewandowski, a sophomore at North Catholic, was named to the All-State second team in 4A. Her teammate – Tess Myers was named to the third team.
–Karns City’s Emily Hegedus was named to the All-State 3A second team.
–Ellie Thompson of AC Valley was named to the 1A second team.
–North Allegheny’s Rachel Martindale was named first team in 6A.
Track & Field:
–The Butler Girls’s Track & Field team clinched the WPIAL Triple-A Section-3 title last night with a 100-50 victory over Seneca Valley. It is their third section title in a row. They finished the regular season 7-0. Seedings for the WPIAL playoffs will be announced Thursday.
—Liz Simms had an outstanding meet with individual first place finishes in the 400 and 800 and also part of the winning 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams. Maggie Welty won the 1600, 4×800 and was second in the 800. Chesna Tomko also had four first place finishes starting with the 300 Hurdles and then legs of the winning 4×100, 4×400 and 4×8000 relay teams. Gabby Boden won the 200 and also was part of the winning 4×400 amd 4×100 relay teams. Jena Reinheimer, who is competing in the Penn Relays Thursday, won the discus. Alison Altman won the high jump with Lucy Link winning the triple jump. Alyssa Eyth was victorious in the shot put and Samantha Penrod earned first place in the pole vault. Heidi Gross completed the first place finishes with her effort in the javelin.
–The Butler Boy’s Track & Field team also defeated Seneca Valley, who were the defending WPIAL champions. The win secures a playoff spot for the Golden Tornado.
