Pennsylvania Turnpike call boxes may become a thing of the past.
State lawmakers are reviewing a House bill this week that would allow the Turnpike Commission to eliminate the more than 1,000 boxes over time.
Supports of the move say the devices are no longer needed because most drivers use cell phones. Turnpike officials say they are studying if there are spots on the turnpike where cell phones don’t work.
The number of calls from the boxes has dropped from about 18,000 in 2000 to 1,500 in 2012.
The elimination would save about $200,000 annually.
