Today marks 20 years since the massive flooding brought on by Hurricane Ivan.
The storm formed in early September before hitting parts of the Gulf Coast.
Ivan eventually worked its way into the Butler region on September 17th. The Pittsburgh Airport recorded 5.95 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, which is the most-ever.
In Butler, a disaster emergency was declared before 5 p.m. that day. An estimated 200 people from Renfrew were evacuated and spent the night at a Red Cross shelter inside Connoquenessing Elementary School.
The whole Butler area was subject to significant flooding, including 20 students who were not able to get home from the South Butler School District.
