Today is America Recycles Day…a day to spotlight the importance of recycling.
Justin Stockdale from the Pennsylvania Resources Council told our radio station that this has been recognized for upwards of 20 years. It was originally called Keep America Beautiful and Pennsylvania Recycle Awareness Month. Over the years, it’s evolved into a ‘recycle day’ and is celebrated each November 15.
Stockdale says the state has a couple of areas that are designed to be able to sort recyclable, although not everything can be. Some plastics, even though they are thrown in a recyclable bin, are not recyclable.
A common question people ask is: “Do I leave the lid on a bottle or not when I want to recycle it?” Stockdale says most often you should just leave the lid on when it comes to items like milk jugs, medicine bottles, and pop bottles. Sorters at the recycling plants will be able to tell if it can be recycled.
