A truck carrying 30,000 pounds of fracking silica sand crashed Sunday causing a big mess near Butler County.
State Police in Kittanning say the Mack Truck and trailing trailer were traveling east on Route 908 in Fawn Township, Allegheny County at 7:30 a.m. when the driver was unable to get the truck stopped after traveling down a hill.
The truck ended up crossing Lardintown Road, traveling through the Lardintown Road Bridge construction site, and plummeting over the hillside into Lardintown Run stream.
Diesel fuel and oil leaked into the stream, as well as several tons of silica sand (which is used during Marcellus Shale fracking). There was an ELD device on the truck which showed that he hadn’t been working too long for the crash wasn’t due to fatigue. It’s important that truck companies have an ELD device on their trucks and they can find out more here.
The truck driver (31-year-old Robert Riley of Pittsburgh) was taken to the hospital.
