A program to help veterans become teachers in one year at Slippery Rock University has received a large state grant.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education will contribute over $272,000 towards the Troops To Teachers program.
This program is designed to provide accelerated training toward teaching certifications for veterans with bachelor degrees. The grant is designed to fill positions with the greatest need including math, science and foreign languages.
In June, SRU and West Chester University will recruit a combined 25-50 veterans who will first take summer online courses. The veterans will then be matched with a cooperating teacher to get classroom training. Tuition will be covered based on eligibility for the GI Bill.
