It’s been over a year since the state adopted the new “Move Over Law” requiring drivers to move to the left lane whenever there’s an emergency response happening on the side of the road.
But a new report shows that many drivers aren’t following that law—in fact 70 percent of drivers don’t change lanes.
The Department of Transportation says it’s important for drivers to follow the rules, especially after the death of a first responder on I-81 last month. That’s the fifth person who has died responding to a roadside emergency in the last nine months.
Fines are significant if you don’t follow the Move Over Law—the first violation can result in a fine of up to $1,000.
