PennDOT says traffic deaths in the state in 2015 were near a record low.
The department announced Wednesday there were 1,200 traffic deaths throughout the commonwealth last year, the second-lowest number since it began keeping records in 1928. The record low of 1,195 was set in 2014.
PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards attributed the low number to infrastructure improvements, as well as increased education and traffic enforcement. The department has invested about $50 million over the past five years in safety measures like rumble strips, signs and pavement markings.
