The Butler City Fire Department has been taking measures to help with the city’s dire financial situation.
City Councilwoman and Director of Public Safety Kathy Kline said one of the ways the department can save money is through ‘trade days.’
“If someone in the fire department needs a day off, instead of just taking a vacation day or incurring overtime, I asked the guys to please give great consideration to trading days with their fellow firefighters instead of just calling off and incurring that overtime,” Kline said during a city council meeting Thursday.
According to Kline, her request resulted in 76 trade days and nearly $27,000 saved so far this year. Members of the fire department have also saved an estimated $3,000-$4,000 by making minor repairs and performing other maintenance in house.
Butler Mayor Tom Donaldson voiced appreciation for the actions taken by the firefighters.
“Everybody’s done just about as much as they can,” he said Thursday. “We appreciate those guys doing what they did there. That’s one of the areas that was a sore spot and I appreciate it a lot that they could do it that way.”
Office staff at the city building has also been saving money with printing and copying supplies. Councilman Mike Walter told council during an earlier meeting this week that the city being able to make their budget this year was “going to be close.”
