Tougher DUI laws are now in effect in Pennsylvania.
First-time offenders with a blood-alcohol level of 0.10 percent or higher must now get an ignition interlock device in their vehicle. The device requires the driver to blow into it to ensure he or she hasn’t been drinking. If it detects alcohol, the vehicle won’t turn on.
There’s also a push by some lawmakers to increase the penalty for a repeat drunken driver who is involved in a fatal crash. Pending legislation would make that charge the same as third-degree murder, which carries a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison.
