Representatives in Buffalo Township hope work can begin soon on the Todd Nature Reserve before a grant has been approved.
John Haven, Chair of the Board for Buffalo Township, told our newsroom that a Waiver of Retro-Activity can be applied for through DCNR. What that means is that work can begin with money reimbursed after the grant is approved. If that is the route taken, work would start on storm water drainage issues.
The Audubon Society continues to be involved in the park as they are offering matching funds for a grant. They are also being allowed to plan the layout of the park.
Haven told us the society has extensive experience in setting these parks up and designing them. So, the audubon society is setting up both the park and Kids Nature Park for Buffalo Township.
Nine years ago, Buffalo Township had the opportunity to buy the property that’s along the Little Buffalo Creek, near the Buffalo-Freeport Trail. At the time, it was 5.5 acres of land, but since have added an additional 1.5 acres, so the size of the property is about 6.48 acres now.
Hopes are that in the next year and a half, the nature reserve will be open and ready to enjoy. This will be a free park, open to the public, between dawn to dusk; with a nature center about a mile away.
