Memorial Day has long been known as the unofficial start of summer and Americans, including here in Pennsylvania, are expected to kick off the season by traveling in near-record numbers. AAA estimates 41 million people will travel nationwide, which is about 5 percent more than last year and the most in a dozen years.
In the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, AAA estimates there will be about 5 million travelers, up four-and-a-half percent from last year.
Travel delays on major roads could be more than three times longer than normal.
