Thousands are gathering in Punxsutawney this morning as they wait to hear if the winter will be prolonged.
It’s Groundhog Day at Gobbler’s Knob. The crowd began to arrive late last night with festivities starting early this morning.
The annual tradition is attributed to a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow, meaning there will be six more weeks of winter.
The holiday garners much fanfare in Punxatawney, with the ceremony being held at Gobbler’s Knob. It at times has had an attendance of 10,000. The first groundhog celebration for the day can be traced to the late 1800s.
