Butler City Council will send a letter to the Butler County Assessment Office opposing all property reassessments in the city with the exception of owner-occupied homes.
“What you’re asking that we put forward is just to tell the county, ‘look we’re really not in favor of all these non-owner-occupied homes being continually reassessed and their value brought down’ and therefore, our tax rolls going down,” Butler Mayor Ben Smith said Tuesday during a Butler City Council meeting.
Council member Jeff Smith proposed this action based on the large number of reassessment requests that apply to city properties and reduce the city’s tax base.
People buying a single-family dwelling should be encouraged to get an accurate assessment but, according to Smith, commercial owners should be held to a different standard.
“In the case of commercial properties, or people who are buying rental properties, they should know what they’re buying,” Smith said. “They should make their purchase based on what their costs are going to be. If reassessment is a major issue, then the county should address reassessment countywide, but this is just a constant drain on our income.”
This letter is not likely to change the situation; however, the assessment office could be made aware of the effect that the adjustments are having on the city.
