A man known as ‘The Walking Monk’ traveled into Butler Wednesday.
The man’s actual name is Bhaktimarga Swami and he was born in Ontario, Canada. He adopted the monastic lifestyle of the Hare Krishna in the 70s and began marathon walking. He walked across the entire length of Canada from the west to east cost in 1996. His journey- known as Canwalks-was detailed in the Canada documentary “The Longest Road.”
In addition to now walking Canada four times, he has also walked across the countries of Ireland, Israel, the Figi Islands and others. He promotes pilgrimage and a more care-free lifestyle.
The Walking Monk said his stop at Butler’s Cubs Hall, which was formerly a YMCA, was dedicated to his teacher…who spent time here. He is currently on a 900-mile trek from Boston.
The Walking Monk is scheduled to speak during an event this weekend at Butler’s Grand Ballroom.
