The Slippery Rock University football team defeated Mercyhurst 37-25 Saturday at Mihalk-Thompson Stadium. The victory continues the nation’s longest winning streak at home to 20 games. The Rock jumped out to a 31-9 lead at halftime, led by freshman Dontez Rash who scored twice in the opening half. Rash was making his first start for the Rock, replacing injured back Shamar Greene, who is the Rock’s all-time leading rusher. Rash finished with 102 yards on 21 carries. Wide receiver Milly Ray had nine catches for 126 yards a touchdown, including a 38-yard pass from quarterback Don King, III for the Rock’s only second half touchdown after the Lakers closed to within 31-23 late in the third quarter.
King, III ended the night with 310 yards and two touchdown passes.
Freshman kicker Jake Chapla booted a 51-yard field goal, the longest in 13 years.
The Rock will travel to IUP next Saturday in a key PSAC-West matchup. IUP fell to California Saturday night 31-28.
