The Slippery Rock University football team moved up four places to No. 21 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II national rankings that were released Monday afternoon. The Rock defeated New Haven 39-13 in their season-opener Saturday in Connecticut. The AFCA poll is widely regarded as the official Division II national ranking that is used by the NCAA throughout the season. After the first week of the season The Rock find themselves ranked higher than any other Super Region 1 team after each of the other four ranked teams in the preseason poll dropped their season openers. Slippery Rock was ranked 25th in the preseason poll that was released in mid-August.
Slippery Rock is scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule Saturday night against East Stroudsburg in the NCAA Division II Showcase Game of the Week in front of a national television audience. The game can be seen live on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app and will be available in the Pittsburgh market on WPNT-22. The game can also be heard on The Rock Station 97,7fm and at 977rocks.com. It will also be the annual White Out game at SRU and follows Slippery Rock Village Fest and Family and Friends Weekend events happening earlier in the day.
The Rock field hockey team defeated American International 4-1 Monday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. They are now 1-1 to start the season, after losing 3-2 to Bellarmine (Kentucky) Sunday.
