We now officially know that it was synthetic marijuana that sickened six guards at the Butler County Prison back in August.
Prison Warden Joe DeMore had suspected that synthetic marijuana, also known as K2, was laced onto inmates’ mail, but he couldn’t be certain until the mail was tested. The mail has since been sent off to an outside lab, and DeMore said during a Butler County Prison Board meeting on Tuesday that the tests confirmed the drug was present.
“It was synthetic marijuana,” DeMore said.
It was in mid-August that six prison employees experienced shortness of breath and dizziness and were taken to the hospital. Since the incident, the prison has revamped its mail policy and now scans all incoming mail, other than legal mail, and gives inmates a copy to read.
Next year, prisoners will begin reading their mail on an electronic tablet.
