The Squirrel Hill synagogue shooting suspect has pleaded not guilty in federal court to killing 11 people in a rampage last weekend.
Robert Bowers, 46, of Baldwin walked into the courtroom Thursday morning instead of being wheeled in, like he was earlier this week. His wrists were shackled to his waist; he was wearing a red jumpsuit and had a large bandage on his upper right arm.
He is facing a 44-count indictment and requested a jury trial.
Bowers remains held in the Butler County Prison without bond.

It’s still unclear exactly why the synagogue shooting suspect was transferred from Allegheny County to the Butler County Prison. Butler County does have a contract with federal marshals. The prison is paid $76 per day to house federal inmates.
It’s unclear if the needs of a high-profile inmate would require more costs- including who will foot the bill for transportation costs to and from Pittsburgh for court appearances.
