A Butler County school district has been recognized as a leader in the food service department and has been called upon to help the federal government come up with new child nutrition standards.
The Seneca Valley School District and its Food Service Director Darlene Carmack will be showcased as a success story for healthy foods in schools this month. Carmack will represent Pennsylvania and meet with members of Congress in Washington, D.C. to help legislators understand the challenges and benefits of the National Lunch Program and the recent Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
Healthier nutrition standards for school meals went into effect four years ago. More than 70 percent of parents nationally are thought to support healthier standards for school meals and snacks.
The meeting with Congress is set for Feb. 21-23.
