A Butler County man will make history Sunday as he attends his 50th Super Bowl game, one of only three fans who can say they’ve seen them all.
Tom Henschel, 74, of Winfield Township was in attendance for the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game in 1967, as the Super Bowl was known then.
Fast forward 50 years later, we asked Tom if he’d be heading to San Francisco this weekend…
“Oh ya,” Tom said, chuckling. “There’s no doubt about it. I’ll be there. It’s going to be a pretty special year for me.”
He says a love for football was in his blood from a young age. He got tickets to the first couple Super Bowls by chance and after attending the first five, he knew he wanted to keep going, and did whatever he had to do to get tickets.
After 49 years and thousands upon thousands of dollars, Tom says the NFL is picking up the tab this year.
“I got a letter from Roger Goodell back in November,”he said. “Our tickets are right on the 50 yard line, $2,500 a piece.”
His favorite Super Bowl?
“I have to be honest…all the Steeler ones,” he said. “The six we won were great, but even the two we lost were awesome.”
Tom will be an honored guest at an NFL award ceremony Saturday, prior to Sunday’s game.
