Currently closed Summit Elementary School will likely not be ready for the start of next school year so students who normally attend there will start classes at Broad Street Elementary.
Acting Superintendent Dr. William Pettigrew said Friday construction of a new water line connecting the school to public water will likely be finished by the district’s August start date but there might not be time for follow-up testing and line-flushing. As a precautionary measure, Pettigrew said Summit students will start class at Broad Street and then move to Summit after tests are completed.
“The problem that I’m having is they haven’t starting digging the line yet and it’s June,” Pettigrew. “I’m not sure if by the start of school it will be absolutely ready.”
Summit Elementary was shut down earlier this year after tests revealed high levels of lead and copper in the school’s water. The school used to run off well water but will switch to public water upon completion of a Pennsylvania American Water line from the school to the intersection of Bonniebrook and Brinker roads.
