More water testing is needed at Butler Area School District’s Summit Township Elementary School before district administrators can begin planning to return students to the facility.
The Butler Area School Board heard an update on Monday night from their water engineers, Gannet Fleming. All water fixtures were replaced in early October. Water samples will be taken from every fixture on Wednesday and tested, followed by another batch of samples taken from every water source in the building the following week.
If the results of all those tests come back below the state Department of Environmental Protection’s action levels for lead and copper, the district will meet with a committee of teachers about planning a return for students. Once started, that transition is expected to take at least three days.
Summit students have been attending Broad Street Elementary School in the city of Butler since February.
