The Butler School Board voted unanimously Monday to reopen Summit Township Elementary School.
Students will be transitioned back in time to start class on Jan. 3.
The school calendar will be adjusted. Summit students will not attend class on Dec. 22 or Jan. 2 to allow extra time for district teachers, administrators and employees to complete the move. The rest of the district will be in class on those days. Summit students will make the days up on Jan. 22 and Feb. 16 when the rest of the district has off.
Summit Elementary was closed in February after it was discovered the levels of lead and copper in the water exceeded the state Department of Environmental Protection’s action levels. Summit students have been attending class at Broad Street Elementary in the city of Butler since.
According to District Superintendent Dr. Brian White and Solicitor Tom King, the district is in full compliance with the state Department of Education concerning the requirements for the transition back to Summit. However, a public hearing will need to be held sometime over the next month to be able to officially close Broad Street Elementary again.
Summit Elementary is now hooked up to public water, all water fixtures have been replaced, and tests done in November by district-hired water engineers showed the water is safe to drink.
