The Butler School Board has given official approval to a plan that would transition students back to Summit Township in time for the semester starting in January.
Summit Township Elementary students will not attend class Friday, December 22nd and Tuesday, January 2nd to allow extra time for district teachers, administrators, and employees to complete the move. Those students will then be expected to attend class January 22nd and February 16th when other students are off.
The school was closed in February after it was discovered the levels of lead and copper in the water exceeded the state Department of Environmental Protection’s action levels. Summit students have been attending class at Broad Street Elementary in the city of Butler.
According to District Superintendent Dr. Brian White and Solicitor Tom King, the district is in full compliance with the PA Department of Education about the requirements for the transition. However a public hearing will need to be held sometime over the next month to be able to officially close Broad Street School again after the move.
