Donations are being collected in the city of Butler on Tuesday to benefit Butler Area School District students through the ‘Kids Weekend Backpack Program.’
The program was started by the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation four years ago. President Audray Muscatello-Yost says it benefits the district’s under-privileged students by supplying them with food on the weekends, and during school breaks.
“These kids receive a free breakfast and lunch while they’re at school, but then they don’t have enough food on the weekends,” Muscatello-Yost said. “We supply food for the weekend.”
At least nine food items are put discreetly in the backpacks of students in need on Fridays or before a school break.
Megan Lucas is a teacher and volunteer with the program.
“These kids really need this,” Lucas said.
Individual-portioned food donations (for things like cereal and applesauce) are being accepted at several city locations until 4 p.m. Tuesday: the Butler YMCA, Emily Brittain Elementary School and at Westminster Church. School supplies is also being collected.
