A local program is helping to bridge the gap for many hungry kids in our area over the summer.
The Butler YMCA is once again partnering with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to offer the Summer Food Program. This year, the Y will expand the program to include a site at the Christie Avenue playground in the city.
Through the program, kids receive a lunch, a snack and recreational activities at no charge. There are no qualification standards or paperwork required- all children 18 and younger are eligible.
Families looking for more information can call 2-1-1 or text FOOD to 877-877.
In Butler County, officials say about 6,400 children, or 17 percent, receive free or reduced school lunches during the school year.
