Expanding passenger rail service in western Pennsylvania remains a topic of discussion.
At least two passenger rail studies are underway- one looking at the route between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh; the other examining the smaller Pittsburgh to Altoona corridor.
Along with negotiating with freight carrier Norfolk Southern which owns that stretch of track, PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards says one other critical factor is needed.
“We need the federal government to step up and help,” Richards said. “If you travel outside the U.S., you can see the investment that they’ve made in rail.”
Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian currently provides one daily round trip between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, with stops in Lewistown, Huntingdon, Tyrone, Altoona, Johnstown, Latrobe and Greensburg.
