Students at Emily Brittain Elementary School will try a new dismissal strategy beginning next week.
The Butler Area School District has been given permission by the city of Butler to close down part of Walnut Street from 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. on school days. A trial run of the new procedure will be held next Tuesday (2/16).
Students have been being dismissed out of exists near West Penn Street this year, which has led to concerns about safety as parents and children try to cross that busy road.
Since Walnut is a smaller and less busy street, the city was willing to go along with the plan to allow the district to construct and place barriers on the street during that 30-minute window. School Board member Suzie Bradrick credits Superintendent Dr. Dale Lumley and Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education Dr. Mary Wolf for finding a solution to this issue.
