Parts of Butler County were hit hard by strong storms on Monday evening that flooded streets and basements, toppled trees and downed wires, and left some residents and businesses in the dark.
Hydro-meteorological forecaster for the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh John Darnley says Zelienople was the hardest hit place in the county, with more than two inches of rain falling in about one hour.
“Zelienople received 2.11 inches…Harmony got just a bit less. That’s quite a bit of rain,” Darnley said Tuesday morning.
Darnley says it was a narrow band of storms that moved through, and some areas of the county were spared completely.
“Evans City, believe it or not, only had .74 inches,” he said. “It was very much hit-or-miss. Some areas got zero rain.”
He says the possibility for another round of storms to hit Tuesday afternoon and evening is strong, but after today, the risk for severe weather decreases as we move throughout the rest of the week.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a Flash Flood Warning for Zelienople and Harmony on Monday evening.
