As expected, Tony Stewart announced Wednesday that he would retire as a Sprint Cup Series driver following the 2016 season. Stewart’s replacement in the Number-14 entry will be Clint Bowyer, who will drive for a yet-to-be announced team in 2016 before moving over to Stewart-Haas Racing. After winning his third NASCAR championship in 2011, Stewart’s year-to-year performance has steadily declined. He finished ninth in the final 2012 standings and has now missed the post-season Chase three years in a row – carrying a sixty-nine-race winless streak into Sunday’s Triple-A 400 at Dover International Speedway.
