The Pittsburgh Steelers traded up three spots in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday to select Georgia tackle Broderick Jones 14th overall. It was the first time the Steelers have used a first-round selection on an offensive tackle in 27 years. They sent their 17th overall pick in last night’s draft along with a fourth-round pick to New England in order to move up for the selection. The Steelers felt the need to move in front of the New York Jets to get a player they obviously coveted. It was one of six trades in the first round.
The Steelers will have three picks tonight. They will be the first team on the clock when Round Two of the draft begins at 7pm. They have the 32nd and 49th picks in the second round, and the number 80 pick in the third round.
Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was the first overall pick, taken by Carolina. The Houston Texans took Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second pick, and then traded with Arizona to move up to the third pick to take Alabama defensive lineman Will Anderson, Jr.
Pitt defensive lineman Calijah Kancey was taken 19th overall by Tampa Bay.
The NFL Draft continues tonight and Saturday. The Steelers will have the first overall pick tonight when the second and third rounds begin at 7pm. Rounds four through seven will begin at noon Saturday.
