The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 33-20 Sunday. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton fractured his thumb after throwing an interception. The Steelers improved to 8-5 overall, and are tied with Kansas City and the New York Jets in the AFC Wild Card standings. They host the Denver Broncos this Sunday.
With the victory over the Bengals, head coach Mike Tomlin earned his 90th career win. He joins Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher as the third coach in Steelers history to reach 90 regular season wins, and the Steelers are the first franchise in NFL history to have three different head coaches reach the 90 win milestone. Noll tallied 193 career wins. Cowher had 149. All three coaches have won Super Bowls.
Mike Tomlin also became the first head coach in Steelers history to win 90 games in his first nine seasons. He is just the third head coach in NFL history to win at least eight games in each of his first nine years with the same team, joining John Madden with Oakland and Dennis Green with Minnesota.
The New England Patriots defeated the Houston Texans 27-6 last night and clinched an AFC playoff spot. Combined with the Steelers victory over Cincinnati and Oakland’s 15-12 victory over Denver, the Patriots are back to the top seed in the AFC.
Tonight in Monday Night Football: The Miami Dolphins host the New York Giants at 8:30pm.
