State officials are urging Pennsylvania residents to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile Virus.
Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Neil Schader says PA residents can take steps to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus.
“The best thing for people to do is really to eliminate any places around their home where mosquitoes could be breeding,” he said. “That includes any place where there is standing water.”
People are also urged to use insect repellent when they’re outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes carrying West Nile are most active.
The state usually sees at least a handful of human cases of West Nile each year. The new state budget includes a $139,000 increase in funding for the state’s West Nile and Zika virus control program.
