The Pennsylvania State Senate has passed a bill that would prohibit school districts from requiring a COVID vaccine mandate.
Republican Senator Michele Brooks of northwestern PA says the bill would not force the vaccine on students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
“This legislation is not about the vaccine itself, it’s about parental options,” Brooks said. “In fact, I have spoken to many, many vaccinated parents who just want to be given back their parental rights in responding to COVID.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Anthony Williams of Philadelphia says he’s not sure the bill is even necessary.
“What’s curious about this is we don’t have a [vaccine] mandate. So we’re passing a bill to prevent a mandate we don’t have,” Williams said. “I don’t understand that.”
The vote was 28-21 and now goes to the House.
