A local legislator has introduced a bill that would make sexual extortion against the law.
State Representative Tedd Nesbit (R-Butler, Mercer) says House Bill 1402 would make it illegal to coerce an individual to engage in sexual conduct or create images or recordings of a sexual nature.
In a press release on Tuesday, Nesbit said he believes people should have the full support of the law when someone tries to blackmail them into performing or recording a sexual act.
“I’m proud to introduce legislation that would create a new type of crime called sexual extortion,” Nesbit said Tuesday. “Our legislation would help law enforcement and victim service organizations to address this as a serious sex crime. We need to educate people of what information they share and what they expose. Not only do we need to prosecute it, but we’ve got to make sure it doesn’t happen in the first place.”
