There has been a large increase in scams in the local area recently. There are 2 major victims of this, young people having their information stolen and elderly people being taken advantage of.
Young adults often need to take control of their own expenses when they’re not fully educated on how to deal with their finances. They know how to find the best credit card to build credit, how to budget parts of their income, etc. – but they can often be naive and scammers know this.
Scammers will often ring young people and pretend to be their bank, saying something is wrong with their account and ask for their details to sort the issue. People don’t always know that banks won’t ask for their information over the phone so they hand over their details to scammers simply because they lack experience in these types of things.
The Pennsylvania State Police have also issued a Community Service Bulletin to continue to warn against so-called distraction burglaries that seem to be plaguing the area’s elderly.
Police say during the spring and summer months, Pennsylvania is visited by criminals who travel great distances to make money.
Two of the most common scams include…
- Home Repair Scams. In this case, scammers approach victims at their front door & offer to fix a driveway or roof for a very low price. Often, the scammer will not adequately perform the work or won’t perform it at all after receiving the money. If you need home maintenance, such as roof repairs, never accept any help from front door scammers. Do your own research into dependable companies like roofing St Louis instead of accepting help from businesses you know nothing about.
- Diversion Thefts, where criminals approach and distract a homeowner while a second criminal enters the home from the back. Ensure to be vigilant always when you notice strangers lurking around your area or when they visit you. Also, having a strong lock system could help in such situations. Maybe, opting for the help of any Locksmith in Baltimore, MD., or any nearby places you live in, might be a better option.
In either of these cases, the scammers may look official with fake identification badges and work uniforms.
You’re advised to always lock your doors, even if you’re just doing yard work or getting the mail. Be careful who you let into your home. And, check with your utility company by telephone if someone shows up at your door asking to do work.
